Barracuda CloudGen F82 and F183R End of Life: February 28, 2027
The Barracuda CloudGen Firewall F82 Rev. A and F183R Rev. A reach end of life on February 28, 2027. Barracuda's EoS / EoL Definitions page lists that date as the End of Firmware Support (EoFS), which it also calls End of Life, for both models. Both went end of sale on February 28, 2022. After end of life, firmware Barracuda releases is no longer tested or supported on these appliances, so a firewall left in place stays on its last supporting firmware and loses the path to new security fixes as that firmware line ages out.
The dates Barracuda publishes
| Model | Part number | End of sale (EoS and EoHS) | End of life (EoFS) | Successor Barracuda names |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F82 Rev. A | BNGF82a | February 28, 2022 | February 28, 2027 | F180B with third party DSL SFP transceiver (not included) |
| F183R Rev. A | BNGF183Ra | February 28, 2022 | February 28, 2027 | F193.R |
| F183 Rev. A | BNGF183a | July 31, 2021 | July 31, 2026 (ended) | F180 Rev. B |
The successor wording is Barracuda's own, copied from its table. Barracuda's table shows no end-of-sale date set for the F180 Rev. B or the F193.R Rev. A, so both are current hardware. Barracuda prints no last supporting firmware release for the F82 Rev. A or F183R Rev. A yet; for some models that have already ended it prints one in brackets next to the date. Every CloudGen Firewall model and revision is on the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall page.
What ends on the end-of-life date
Barracuda defines End of Firmware Support as the last day of firmware support for the hardware and firmware product bundle, including software subscriptions, content security subscriptions and any hardware maintenance subscription. Its definitions page spells out what follows:
- New firmware is not tested on these models. CloudGen Firewall firmware released after the date is no longer tested or supported on the hardware model and may not work.
- No next major release. The model is dropped from future major releases, so the upgrade to the next major release is no longer possible. Upgrades to later minor releases remain possible but are untested, with no guarantee they work.
- No more firmware fixes for hardware faults. After end of life, firmware related hardware failures are no longer fixed, and customers must move to the successor model or other hardware.
- The box keeps running, for now. Barracuda says the hardware still functions as long as it is not upgraded to firmware released after the end-of-life date. It becomes completely unsupported when the last firmware release that supports it reaches its own end of support, which Barracuda tracks on its separate End-of-Support for CloudGen Firewall Firmware page.
Barracuda's own recommendation is to start the transition to the successor model after the end-of-life date, to avoid non-supported firmware upgrades and hotfixes that may cause malfunction and degrade security. For a perimeter firewall, the practical reading is to have the replacement racked before February 28, 2027, not to begin ordering after it.
What you can still renew
| Subscription | What Barracuda says about renewal |
|---|---|
| Instant Replacement | Renewals possible until the end-of-life date, not beyond it. |
| Warranty extension | Limited to a maximum of five years of use of the serial number, and not possible after the end-of-life date. |
| New add-on subscriptions | Can be purchased until the end-of-life date. |
| Energize Updates, Malware Protection, ATP, Advanced Remote Access, FirewallInsights, Premium Support | Renewals possible beyond the end-of-life date, but functionality is limited to the last supporting firmware release. |
Renewing Energize Updates past the date therefore buys updates within the last supporting firmware release, not support for firmware Barracuda ships afterwards. Barracuda's definitions page does not describe a paid extension of firmware support beyond the end-of-life date for these models.
Security exposure
No entry in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog names the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall or NextGen Firewall on the day of publication. The one Barracuda entry in the catalog, CVE-2023-2868, is in the Email Security Gateway appliance, a different product. That is not a reason to keep an F82 or F183R in service: a firewall vulnerability found after end of life is fixed in firmware the appliance is no longer tested to run. The live risk scores are on the F82 Rev. A and F183R Rev. A score pages.
What to do
- Find every F82 and F183R in the estate by part number (BNGF82a, BNGF183Ra), including spares and branch units managed from a Firewall Control Center.
- Pick the successor Barracuda names: the F180B with a third party DSL SFP transceiver for the F82 Rev. A, and the F193.R for the F183R Rev. A. Budget the transceiver separately for F82 sites; Barracuda notes it is not included.
- Order before the date, not after it. Instant Replacement cannot be renewed past February 28, 2027, so a hardware failure after that day has no replacement cover on these models.
- Hold firmware on the old units until they are swapped. Barracuda warns that upgrading to firmware released after the end-of-life date may not be possible or may cause malfunction.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall F82 end of life?
The F82 Rev. A (part number BNGF82a) reaches End of Firmware Support, which Barracuda also calls End of Life, on February 28, 2027, according to Barracuda's NextGen and CloudGen Firewall Appliances EoS / EoL Definitions page. It went end of sale on February 28, 2022.
When is the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall F183R end of life?
The F183R Rev. A (part number BNGF183Ra) reaches End of Firmware Support (End of Life) on February 28, 2027, the same day as the F82 Rev. A. Its end of sale was February 28, 2022.
What happens to a Barracuda firewall after its EoL date?
Barracuda defines EoL as the last day of firmware support for that hardware model. Firmware released after that date is no longer tested or supported on the model and may not work, the model cannot upgrade to the next major firmware release, and firmware related hardware failures are no longer fixed. The appliance keeps working on its last supporting firmware release, and becomes completely unsupported when that firmware release reaches its own end of support.
What replaces the Barracuda F82 and F183R?
Barracuda names the F180B with a third party DSL SFP transceiver (not included) as the successor to the F82 Rev. A, and the F193.R as the successor to the F183R Rev. A. Barracuda's table shows no end-of-sale date set for the F180 Rev. B or the F193.R Rev. A.
Can I renew Energize Updates on an F82 or F183R after end of life?
Yes, with a limit. Barracuda says renewals of Energize Updates, software subscriptions and Premium Support are possible beyond the EoL date, but functionality is limited to the last supporting firmware release. Instant Replacement can be renewed only up to the EoL date, and warranty extensions cannot be renewed after it.
