Windows 11, version 24H2 reaches end of support on October 13, 2026 for the Home and Pro editions (Pro Education and Pro for Workstations follow the same date) and on October 12, 2027 for Enterprise and Education. Those are the end dates in the Releases tables on Microsoft's Windows 11 Home and Pro and Enterprise and Education lifecycle pages. Windows feature updates follow Microsoft's Modern Lifecycle Policy: an edition gets monthly security and quality updates until its version's end date, and nothing after it. The version shipped on October 1, 2024, so Home and Pro get their standard 24 months and Enterprise and Education 36.

What "end of support" means for a 24H2 device

The device keeps working. What stops is the monthly cumulative update: no security fixes, no quality fixes, no Microsoft support for the version. Unlike the Windows 10 cliff, there is no Extended Security Updates program to buy for a Windows 11 feature update; the answer is the next version, which Windows Update offers automatically to consumer devices approaching the end of a version. Why 24H2 to 25H2 is small. Microsoft's What's new for 25H2 states that devices updating from 24H2 use an enablement package: most of the 25H2 files already exist on a 24H2 device that has a recent monthly security update, and the package is a small, quick-to-install switch that turns the 25H2 features on. That is the same mechanism as 22H2 to 23H2. The practical result is one restart and the usual monthly update size, not a feature-update download and a long install.

What to do

  1. Home and Pro fleets: take 25H2 before October 13, 2026. It is the enablement package; the risk is low and the alternative is an unpatched OS on a Patch Tuesday that also retires three other Windows clocks.
  2. Enterprise and Education: you have until October 12, 2027, but the same package gets you a version supported to October 10, 2028. Pilot 25H2 on the 24H2 image now rather than planning a separate project next summer.
  3. Check the build, not the marketing name. 24H2 and 25H2 share build 10.0.26100 and 10.0.26200 respectively; an inventory that keys on the major build alone will not tell them apart. Our EOL Checker and API resolve both.
  4. LTSC is not affected. Enterprise LTSC 2024 runs to October 9, 2029 on its own policy and does not take feature updates.
