Office 2019 End of Life: Ended October 14, 2025 (Office 2016 Too)
Microsoft Office 2019 reached end of life on October 14, 2025, the day its extended support ended. Office 2016 ended on the same day. Mainstream support for Office 2019, the phase that also brought non-security fixes, had already ended on October 10, 2023. Both dates are on Microsoft's lifecycle page for the product, which lists an Extended End Date and nothing after it: unlike Windows, Office has no Extended Security Updates programme, so there is no paid way to keep a 2019 installation patched.
Which products the date covers
| Product | Editions on Microsoft's page | Mainstream support ended | Support ended |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office 2019 | Home and Business, Home and Student, Personal, Professional, Professional Academic, Professional Plus, Standard | October 10, 2023 | October 14, 2025 |
| Office 2016 | The 2016 releases of the same perpetual suites | October 13, 2020 | October 14, 2025 |
Sources: Microsoft's lifecycle pages for Microsoft Office 2019 and Microsoft Office 2016. Each lists a Listing Start Date, a Mainstream End Date and an Extended End Date, and both Extended End Dates fall on October 14, 2025. Microsoft prints the instants in Pacific time; the dates here are the calendar days in Redmond.
What stopped on that date
The apps do not switch off. What ended is everything that kept them safe to use: security updates, bug fixes and Microsoft technical support. Office documents and email attachments are one of the most common ways attackers get into a computer, which is why an unpatched copy of Word, Excel or Outlook is a bigger risk than most unpatched software. Every flaw found since the date stays open on 2019 and 2016 for good, and the count only grows.
Why there is no paid extension
Windows 10 and Windows Server have Extended Security Updates, a paid programme that keeps security fixes flowing for up to three years after the end date. Office does not. Microsoft's lifecycle pages for Office 2016 and Office 2019 list the Extended End Date as the final milestone, with no ESU option beneath it, and Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy for these releases was five years of mainstream support followed by extended support. Office 2019 was the first release to get a shorter extended phase than the five years its predecessors had, which is why 2016 and 2019 ran out on the same day despite shipping three years apart. After that day the only supported route is a newer release.

| Office 2021 | October 5, 2021 | October 13, 2026 |
| Office 2019 | September 24, 2018 | October 14, 2025 |

What to do
- Find out what you run. In any Office app: File, then Account, then About. Offices that bought licences over the years often have 2016, 2019 and 2021 side by side; two of the three are already out of support and the third has about a year left.
- Pick the replacement by how you buy. One-time purchase: Office 2024, supported to October 9, 2029. Volume licensing in a restricted environment: Office LTSC 2024, supported to October 9, 2029. Everyone else: Microsoft 365, which is updated continuously and has no fixed end date to plan around.
- Do not stop at 2021. It reaches end of support on October 13, 2026, so a move from 2019 to 2021 buys a year and a second migration.
- Check the computer underneath. Office is only as supported as the operating system it runs on. Our guides to Windows and macOS support dates cover that side.
Frequently Asked Questions
When was Office 2019 end of life?
Microsoft Office 2019 reached end of life on October 14, 2025, the Extended End Date on Microsoft's lifecycle page. Mainstream support had already ended on October 10, 2023.
Is Office 2019 still supported?
No. Microsoft stopped issuing security updates, bug fixes and technical support for Office 2019 after October 14, 2025, and there is no paid extension programme for Office.
Will Office 2019 still work after end of support?
The apps keep opening, but every security flaw found since the date stays unfixed. Documents and email attachments are a common way in for attackers, so an unpatched Office install gets riskier with every month that passes.
Did Office 2016 end at the same time?
Yes. Office 2016 reached its Extended End Date on October 14, 2025 as well; its mainstream support had ended on October 13, 2020.
What replaces Office 2019?
Office 2024 or Office LTSC 2024, both supported to October 9, 2029, or a Microsoft 365 subscription, which is updated continuously. Office 2021 is supported only until October 13, 2026, so it is not a sensible destination.
